Case Study
Migrating Epic Hosted Infrastructure In-House at Children's National
Problem
Children's National Hospital was running on Oracle Cerner hosted infrastructure and needed to transition to Epic. The migration had to happen without interrupting a 24/7 pediatric environment where infrastructure downtime is a patient-care event, not a service ticket.
The transition overlapped with two other concurrent enterprise platform shifts - HR to Workday and ServiceNow for ITSM - each with its own infrastructure dependencies and change windows.
What I did
Direct the systems and data center engineering team plus Kyndryl-delivered Tier 1 and Tier 2 support across the full infrastructure estate, covering main campus, research facilities, satellite clinics, and disaster recovery.
Coordinate infrastructure readiness with the clinical application owners who hold application scope, ensuring compute, storage, network, and VDI are in place for each Epic go-live wave.
Established and enforced change governance, backup, and disaster recovery standards across the hospital sites during the transition period.
Administer the Citrix VDI environment delivering clinical and administrative desktops, ensuring no disruption to end-user access during cutover.
Own vulnerability management across the estate - patching, scanning, and upgrade cycles for every operating system, laptop, desktop, and server - throughout the migration.
Result
Infrastructure availability sustained through overlapping enterprise platform transitions without patient-care impact.
Kyndryl held to contracted SLAs across Tier 1 help desk and Tier 2 desk-side support throughout the migration.
Migration on track for completion through 2027 with change governance and DR standards enforced at every step.
